European unity...the Czech way

The Energicers are a multi-cultural bunch, representing three and a half European countries. France, Poland, the Czech Republic and Kim’s new-found home of Norway. While Norway’s not (yet) a member of the European Union, the Czech Republic is in charge of Europe for the next half a year or so. Which is arguably not the most exciting happening of the year for snow-crazy folks like us, but provides some excitement nonetheless. Through art.

David Cerny’s contribution to the Czech EU presidency, currently hanging at the European Parliament in Brussels, has truly stirred up media interest across and beyond Europe. The work, entitled “Entropa”, depicts the 27 EU states in a variety of charicatures. The whole project, mystifying everyone save for Cerny and his two closest colleagues, has received unprecendented response, both positive and negative. Who would, after all, not like to express their opinion of Bulgaria’s representation as a Turkish toilet, or the peeing Latvians across the Russian border?

With a European bunch of friends, I sure had a good laugh at the art masterpiece Entropa. Of course some clichés can, and will, offend people or even whole nations, but noentheless I must applaud Cerny and his collegues for bringing out the differences in us Europeans. For us, this is just another great topic for the endless miles of snow and ice ahead of us in a quite short time…

Till later, Kim
